Get Schwifty: A love song for Rick & Morty

I love Rick & Morty. I really do. I’m already a terrible geek for space, astrophysics and quantum theory. Couple that with the affinity for adult animated series’ from which I’ll apparently never maturate, and you have veritable brain-kibble for me. There’s more to Morty and his lush gramps than the Marty McFly/Doc Brown dynamic. This show has heart, and it exposes that heart in some truly strange and lovely ways.

Although there’s clearly nothing about this wonderful show that’s grounded in reality, the unabashedly complicated relationships of characters and the comically existential crises they face are nothing short of brilliant. Truly, I’ve referenced some of the moments of this show within actual therapy.

I have nothing to criticize with Rick & Morty. Maybe that makes this easy, but the world feels full of things that are so real and painful. A show that can have a big, brooding, thumping heart while also delivering smart, sanctimonious laughs is a gift.
